Success at the Sports Awards

What a fantastic evening we had at the annual North West Leicestershire ‘Let’s Get Moving Awards’ last week.

Organised by the North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), Everyone Active, Active Together and the Schools’ Sports Partnership (which represents 43 schools), the event is an opportunity to celebrate the various sporting achievements that have taken place during the year.

In what was a testament to our commitment to promoting an enriching PE curriculum, Broom Leys Primary School collected three awards during the evening.

Barclays Equal Access School Award

The first was the Barclays Equal Access School Award, which celebrated our dedication to providing equal opportunities for both boys and girls to participate in football activities, ensuring they are all able to access quality coaching, competitive matches and extracurricular opportunities.

School Games Platinum Mark

Next up was the School Games Platinum Mark which, quite remarkably, we received for the eighth year in a row, having been the first school in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to receive this accolade back in 2017.

This government-led award rewards schools for their commitment to the development of PE and competition for their pupils and the local community.

Primary School Team of the Year Award

The highlight of the evening, though, was the presentation of the Primary School Team of the Year Award. Of the three shortlisted teams, two of them were from Broom Leys: the Swimming Team and the Gymnastics Team.

Our swimmers enjoyed a phenomenal year, finishing in first place at the North West Leicestershire Level Two Competition – the school’s first victory in this event – and then going on to finish fourth in the county-wide Leicestershire Level Three Competition.

The Gymnastic Team, meanwhile, also excelled with our Level One and Level Four squads soaring to victory in the local competition before going on represent North West Leicestershire in the County Finals. Held in Oakham, our Level One team finished third and the Level Four squad tied for first place, going on to represent the county at national level.

With two standout achievements, selecting an overall winner was exceptionally challenging. Eventually, though, our Gymnastics Team were named Primary School Team of the Year.

What a magical evening, and one that emphasised the sporting opportunities available to pupils at Broom Leys.
