Re-writing local history
During the Autumn Term, our Year 4 pupils had fun putting their own unique spin on Coalville’s local history. In collaboration with the Leicester Comedy Festival and the UK Kids’ Comedy Festival, pupils worked with comedic poet Rob Gee on ‘The Completely Made-up History of Coalville.’ The project encouraged pupils to think creatively and invent stories about local landmarks.
Starting at the Snibston Colliery Park, pupils walked through the centre of Coalville, observed buildings and used their imagination to come up with ideas such as what it was used for and who might have lived there. The children then wrote their creative stories, which were edited together to form a self-guided trail available to the public.
After months of anticipation, this imaginative project – which offers a fresh and creative perspective on the history of Coalville – goes live from 5th to 23rd of February, with participants able learn more via the following link - https://comedy-festival.co.uk/events/the-completely-made-up-history-of-coalville/
The initiative has also grabbed the attention of the local media. Some of our children, for example, were interviewed by journalist Geeta Pendse for her BBC One programme Politics East Midlands. This segment will be aired on Sunday 9th February at 10am.
“This project has been a brilliant opportunity for our Year 4 pupils to showcase their creativity and imagination,” said Headteacher Robert Prior.
“The children have not only learned more about Coalville's unique history but also developed their creative writing skills in a fun and engaging way.
"It's wonderful to see their unique stories come to life and be shared with the wider community.”
